Scrap sculptures that light up the night by Tal Avitzur
Though Tal Avitzur did not attend art school (he holds a master’s degree in mathematics) he has, over the years, worked odd jobs for painter Irma Cavat, ceramicist Beatrice Wood, kinetic sculptor George Rickey and bronze sculptor Tim “Frogman” Cotterill. He apprenticed under sculptor Ken Bortolazzo.
Here is what Tal has to say “I started visiting scrap metal yard to collect materials for remodeling my house. In my search I found cool old tools, vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, kitchen appliances, research lab parts, etc… Some of these pieces were 50 to 100 years old. They were too nice to leave in the scrap yard. Once my workshop became full of scrap metal I started making these robot sculpture night lights to justify my obsession with collecting these parts. It is loads of fun and I can’t imagine not doing it.”
